Toor dal (or Moong Dal) stir fry recipe (Kerala Parippu Thoran)

  • Toor Dal (Thuvaraparippu) : 1/2 cup
  • Water : 3/4 cup
  • Coconut (grated) : 1/2 cup
  • Shallots (cheriya ulli) or Small Onion : 1/4 cup (sliced)
  • Fennel seeds (Perumjeerakam) : 1/4 teaspoon
  • Green Chilly : 1 or 2
  • Turmeric powder : 1/4 teaspoon
  • Salt : To taste

For seasoning

  • Oil : 1 tablespoon
  • Mustard seeds : 1/2 teaspoon
  • Curry leaves : 1 Sprig
  • Dry Red Chilly : 2

Preparation Method

  1. Soak Toor Dal (or Moong Dal)  in water for 30 – 60 minutes
  2. Clean and add it to a pressure cooker. Add 3/4 cup of water to it and then pressure cook for 1 whistles. Switch off the gas and allow to cool.
  3. Crush together shallots (Small Onion) and Green chilly.
  4. Heat oil in a pan, splutter mustard seeds. Then add fennel seeds, curry leaves and dry red chilly and saute for a few seconds.
  5. Add turmeric powder, the crushed ingredients, grated coconut and saute for few more minutes.
    Then add cooked dal, salt and mix gently.
  6. Cook till everything well combined and semi dry. Toor dal stir fry recipe is ready.
